    Dreams By Langston Hughes
"Dreams," by Langston Hughes is about that you can't live without goals, you have to have something in life to look forward to. If you don't have goals and dreams in life you really have nothing to live for. This poem uses many poetic devices, such as personification in line 2 it says "for if dreams die," dying is a human ability. Another poetic device is metaphor " for if dreams die life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly." This poem has a regular scheme it goes a,b,c,b,d,e,f,e. This poem does make sense because if you didn't have dreams you would be living in life with no purpose. This poem was great! I really enjoy reading Langston Hughes' poems.
    Hold fast to dreams
    For if dreams die
    Life is a broken-winged bird
    That cannot fly.
    Hold fast to dreams
    For when dreams go
    Life is a barren field
    Frozen with snow.

Still I Rise By Maya Angelou
"Still I Rise," by Maya Angelou is about rising above the lies and rumors to become stronger. This person is strong in this poem, they don't break down for anyone or anything. This poem uses repetition, "I rise" is repeated throughout the poem. Another poetic device used in this poem is a simile " 'cause I walk like I've got oil wells pumping im my living room." There are many other similes too. This poem also includes a metaphor, "I'm a black ocean." There is no rhyme scheme is this poem but it does have some words that rhyme. This poem really inspired me, it showed that woman can tell guys what they think without them judging you. This poem was great! I am excited to read more by Maya Angelou.
You may write me down in history
    With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
    Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
    Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
    With the certainty of tides,
    Just like hopes springing high,
    Still I'll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
    Bowed head and lowered eyes?
    Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
    Weakened by my soulful cries.
    Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.
    Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history's shame
    I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
    I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
    I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
    I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
    I rise
    I rise
    I rise.

    Rain Song,"

rain storm and Hughes is explaining his thoughts on the season of spring. This poem uses many poetic devices, such as personification, "let the rain sing you a lullaby," this is an example of personification because singing is a human ability. Another poetic device is repetition "the rain" is repeated in almost every line. This poem I can relate to because I also love the rain, because usually when it rains it means no more snow for that year. Another reason I like this poem is because it uses so much personification, and all my favorite poems includes personification. This is my favorite poem by Langston Hughes that I've read and i'm excited to read more of his work.
    Let the rain kiss you
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops
Let the rain sing you a lullaby
The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk
The rain makes running pools in the gutter
The rain plays a little sleep song on our roof at night
    And I love the rain.

    50-50 By Langston Hughes
"50-50," by Langston Hughes is about a woman being alone in the world and complaining that she is, and someone telling her that she needs to break the wall that she has built over her emotions and she won't be alone anymore. He tells her that she won't be alone if she gives him what he wants too. The poem uses a lot of rhyming words but it doesn't have a regular rhyme scheme. This poem uses repetition, "Ain't got nobody to" is repeated. This poem wasn't my favorite but I could somewhat understand it, Langston Hughes is a good author though. "50-50" was a easy read and easy to understand but it wasn't my favorite poem.
I’m all alone in this world, she said,
Ain’t got nobody to share my bed,
Ain’t got nobody to hold my hand—
    The truth of the matter’s
    I ain’t got no man.
Big Boy opened his mouth and said,
    Trouble with you is
    You ain’t got no head!
If you had a head and used your mind
You could have me with you
    All the time.
She answered, Babe, what must I do?
    He said, Share your bed—
    And your money, too.

    God's Wheel By Shel Sliverstein
"God's Wheel," by Shel Sliverstein is about how a person can't do God's job because they want more out of it, they need money and time off like a real job. But God doesn't get paid for what he does he gets the feeling that he helped someone through life and directed each person down the path they should be on. This poem uses some poetic devices, this doesn't have a regular rhyme scheme but it does have some rhyming words such as, set, get and quit. "God's Wheel is about how a person only cares about what they get out of the deal and doesn't care what feeling you get from doing something good. Shel Sliverstein is a good author and really knows how to portray something using very little words. I am excited to read more of what he has written.
GOD says to me with a kind
of smile, "Hey how would you like
to be God awhile And steer the world?"
"Okay," says I, "I'll give it a try.
    Where do I set?
    How much do I get?
    What time is lunch?
    When can I quit?"
"Gimme back that wheel," says GOD.
    "I don't think you're quite ready YET."

    alwaysAlways by Pablo Neruda
"Always," by Pablo Neruda is written in a mans point of view telling is current girlfriend that he doesn't care about her past with guys he just cares about the present and future together with her. He wrote "I'm not jealous of what came before me," meaning that he loves her and he knows she loves him so he isn't worried she'll go back with any of those guys she was with in her past. This poem includes imagery the line "come with a hundred men in your hair," this pharse creates the image of men actually being in the woman's hair nagging and bragging. This poem also uses a smilie "come like a river full of drowned men." This poem by Pablo Neruda really got my attention because men usually do care about a womans past, usually they use that as a guide to see what happens with her relationships in the past as a key for her future one. This poem was fanastic! I really like Pablo Neruda as a author.
    I am not jealous
    of what came before me.
    Come with a man
    on your shoulders,
come with a hundred men in your hair,
come with a thousand men between your breasts and your feet,
    come like a river
    full of drowned men
which flows down to the wild sea,
to the eternal surf, to Time!
    Bring them all
    to where I am waiting for you;
    we shall always be alone,
we shall always be you and I
    alone on earth,
    to start our life!
